Open Garden in Hartley Vale 16th March
16 March, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
“The Crucible Centre is an valley enfolded by steep wooded hills. It feels safe and protected. Yet 18 years ago it was an uninhabited and infested by tee-tree and Scotch thistle. We bought the land to run workshops to heal the mind while we leave the land to soothe the soul.
We are almost completely surrounded by parklands, a small oasis in a sea of green. In the middle we built a sustainable house with solar electricity and hot water, found a natural spring and created a garden for our joy and an enclosed orchard with over 30 fruit trees. With Mel we created a vegetable garden to supply our needs and those of the folk who come to out workshops.
We hope to show that it is possible to live well from the land, frugally and with minimal strain on nature.
Certainly, this is easier on a couple of hundred acres than on a suburban block, but at a time when badly crafted mass-produced food it blunting our taste buds and adding too many kilos it is wondrous to taste raspberries and kale and pears as I used to as a child.”
